about

I wrote this song very shortly after my Dad died at the end of 2020. His death was very heartbreaking, and it also caused me to reflect on the purpose of a life and the nature of death. I wondered, as we all do, whether death was really the end of life, and whether he still might be out there somewhere. It also made me reflect on the importance I had been placing on so many daily concerns and routines - my ambitions and anxieties around my career and all sorts of things that consumed so much of my waking thoughts. I could almost hear my Dad telling me, “I’m on the other side now, I love you, and I can tell you with certainty that none of that bullshit matters.” I wrote this song as the other side of that conversation.

lyrics

It’s a new world, it’s never gonna be the same
I’ll miss the one I’ve known, though it drove me near insane
But maybe all of this now seems like a funny game
Wherever you are

We all just run around, trying to get the pain to stop
Tryin’ to buy a house in town, waiting for the price to drop
Tryin’ to drown the grinding sound, thinking if I reach the top
I’ll finally be free

While we’re here
Our little lives are everything we’ve got
We pretend they’re never ending, though they’re not
So chalk that up as one more thing you taught me
It’ll come in handy

I haven’t cried, I hope you don’t take it wrong
I always tried to tell you how I felt in song
The night you died, was the journey hard and long
Or was it just like the wind

I like to think
That everything’s connected in some way
Now you’re a million tiny molecules and they
Are floating all around me every day
I can reach out and touch you

While we’re here
Our little lives are everything we’ve got
We pretend they’re never ending though they’re not
Thank you for everything you taught me
It’s come in handy
